Hi Everyone,
Just a quick word to let you know that one of my pieces has been published in a book.
Hidden Lives is an eye-opening anthology about living with a mentally ill person in your family. Most of the stories are brutally honest, heart wrenching, or tear jerking. Okay, not a light read perhaps. I am proud to be a part of the book, and hope my story can help others know they are not alone. There might be one person out there who says, “Yeah, I know exactly how that feels,” and will perhaps take solace in that shared experience.
The statistics are staggering; we all know someone who is mentally ill, we’ve lived with them, loved them, maybe have dealt with it ourselves. Yet the stigma still remains.
It’s funny to think that at one time in history, my Dad would have been called a Shaman, a Holy man, a Seer. In these times, he was simply called Bipolar. That always bothered him, the labelling, the compartmentalized frame of reference in which his persona resided. I think this book shatters the illusions of who gets it, what it feels like, how it’s dealt with. In the end, we are all different, and all the same.
Whhhoooaaaa, sorry to drop the serious bomb on you. But if you want to hear me read the story, come to The Cellar Jazz Club, 3611 West Broadway (near Alma in Kits) on November 8. That’s a Thursday, at seven.
I will be the one wearing glasses and a beret, smoking a cigarette. Oh wait, I can’t do that anymore, damn!
I’ll be there anyway.
